As Swimmers Ran From Violence, Popular Photo Captures Rescuer Running ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, views the renowned beach as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, like many others in the area, detected loud noises reverberating around the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was still too bright and no one could see them,” she explains. Exiting her home, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear something was wrong.

Positioned on the road, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the hill still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up from behind. It was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed to Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the path that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He’s running at something that surely every part of you would instruct you to move in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and ambulance crews caring for dozens of victims.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the patrol base next to the scene of the incident serving as a temporary medical station. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, for instance going into the ocean to assist people in distress.

After the tragedy, comments of appreciation were shared. A social media message expressed thanks for the individuals who showed that “compassion will always conquer hatred”.

The squad of rescuers published a communication, saying they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive sentiments and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the care directed at our responders,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it helps those affected.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many permanent beach safety officers, stated that the crew acted heroically from the moment the violence commenced until late that evening.

“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” stated a mayor.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores secure for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much good we have observed in the face of such evil.”
