At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
