Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials expressed fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "with execution" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Message That Provoked the Debate
The video footage, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic lawmakers who in the past worked in defense or defense positions.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to defend and support this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our constitution aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can decline illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to follow directives that contravene the legal system or our founding principles."
The Former President's Furious Response
The video message appeared to provoke a heated reply from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives React
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified declaration denouncing the remarks.
"Violent politics has no role in America," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our United States with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the protection of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical digital publications and recant his dangerous language before he leads to violence," the declaration added.
Representatives' Strong Answer
The representatives who appeared in the video also released a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who value this nation and took an vow to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the president deems it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the president's calls for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
More Partisan Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of elected officials."
He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the government advising troops to disobey orders, I think that is historic in US history."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and decide all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a administration briefing on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Would the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the representative said. "We see active officials of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a digital communication to members of the national defense, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the commander in chief's legal commands."
She stated: "The purity of our military rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally supporting."
