No professional sports organization promotes competitive balance like the NFL: it’s the entire brand. Yet following the first ten matchups of this season, this doesn't represent a landscape featuring uniform distribution among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. Instead, it's a scenario where the bulk of franchises appear to be fine.

NFC Standings Definition

Looking at the NFC side, at least, there is some clarity. The Rams along with the Seahawks (each holding 7-2 records) appear to be the most balanced franchises across the league, and delivered decisive victories during Sunday's action. The Eagles with six wins despite their struggles maintain one of the most talented rosters across the NFL, similar to the Packers franchise (5-2-1). Detroit as well (six and three), who have been inconsistent along both lines of scrimmage and navigating tension on their coaching staff, have proven they can hammer good teams. For each of these squads, you can still easily construct a Super Bowl path.

Muddled AFC Picture

Over in the AFC, championship race is a jumbled mess. The four teams leading their divisions at this stage: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all standing at eight wins) and the Steelers (five wins, four losses). Read that again. No Chiefs presence. Buffalo is missing. Not the Ravens or Bengals. Historically strong franchises, backed by elite NFL signal-callers, display either significant personnel gaps or are dealing with health issues.

League Equality Design

From certain perspectives, it’s the league’s ideal. However, witnessing the current division frontrunners in the American Football Conference remains somewhat odd. Components of every squad suggest title potential, though not comprehensively. If you were asked to finalize your conference championship predictions today, would you comfortably select any one of the four division leaders?

Franchise Analysis

Indianapolis Outlook

Beginning with the Colts, their quarterback hasn't descended to pumpkin status. But the last two weeks have caused alarm. He has returned to giving away possessions and faltering under duress. He suffered seven sacks versus Atlanta in the weekend game, and had a five-minute stretch in which he threw a pick and lost three fumbles. This comes after he committed turnovers five times versus Pittsburgh.

Indianapolis' offensive unit thrived early in the season because Jones avoided catastrophic mistakes. The running back and protection unit ensure Indianapolis remains able to withstand some negative plays, like their German performance. But Jones returning to his old blunder-prone days would finish postseason aspirations.

New England Analysis

The Patriots seem fairly alike. Previously, they were considered jokes. Now, they’re the NFL's most pleasant shock and the most successful franchise across the league following seven consecutive victories. Had it not been for committing turnover errors a contest they should have won facing Pittsburgh, they'd possess at 9–1 with the top standing. Last season, they seemed veteran and plodding. Today they appear youthful, quick and confident. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook the weakness of New England's opponents. They've played against the most manageable schedule across the NFL, and flaws have still emerged. The signal-caller has taken sacks 35 times – ranking second league-wide – and some of the shots he suffered last weekend proved brutal. With continued play, those beatings accumulate.

Denver Analysis

The Broncos hold 8–2 as well, and the perception remains like they're nervously waiting. Their quarterback has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, with the defense doing most of the responsibility. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate playoff opponents. The Chargers are also hovering in the Western division at 7-2, yet medical problems along their offensive line will present challenges to achieve championship contention.

Steelers Examination

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, somehow still leading the Northern division notwithstanding receiving 25-10 by the Chargers on Sunday night. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defense too often disappears, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations during his career phase continue to show up. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, but Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again and facing easier opponents, have won three consecutive. We shouldn't be completely astonished that the Ravens have pulled within a game of the Steelers, but that it has arrived so quickly highlights deficiencies within the Steelers' uneven performances. Considering the Ravens opened losing five of six yet still appear capable of division victory reveals much about the conference as a whole.

Established Contenders

The Ravens represent a segment of the Big Three – together with Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, that would continue to generate the most fear in opposing teams if they made the playoffs. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, yet Kansas City and Buffalo cannot get out of their own way.

Buffalo Bills

Last week, Buffalo was celebrating post Chiefs triumph. During Sunday's action they experienced a particularly discouraging setback of the season. They didn't simply fail versus the Dolphins; they were embarrassed, losing 30-13 as visitors. The Dolphins secured their first triumph against Buffalo in several seasons.
