New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
