That Grisly Cartoon Film Ending That Lingers Audiences
Among every mature cartoon movies I’ve personally viewed, nothing has stuck with me quite like the fear-filled conclusion of the viscerally violent and deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spain-based filmmaker crafted a dark, melancholy , often savage world with a few small , desolate hints of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars feels like it came from a desire to expand animation further, the director clarified that it was more an attempt to express a universal, cross-cultural message about “the shared root of every conflict.”
This theme is expressed by means of a squad of vividly colored bears , obviously based on a well-known line of lovable figures.
Growing up in a society centered on warmongering as well as the defense industry, many of these creatures are consumed by killing the mythical beasts, thanks to a sacred text that claims them they previously were masters of the woods, before the horned beings expelled them.
Others did not entirely accepted the propaganda, and choose to try out substances and mate in the woods.
Unlike their gentle equivalents, these bright beings display sexual organs and obvious urges.
For one notably brutal, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the war with the unicorns turns into a path to control — and specifically to dominance over his gentler, nicer brother Tubby.
The character behaves aggressively and a seeming antisocial figure , and while terror takes over his unit and claims his teammates individually, he seizes increasingly control personally, through ever more violent, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are experiencing their own horror, through an expanding, destructive monster in their forest.
“Initially, it appears as a lighthearted film,” the director commented. “But then it turns into a more serious and melancholic movie. And in the finale, it becomes a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars starts out similar to among the quirky movies by a legendary filmmaker, which find a wicked pleasure in letting cartoon characters swear, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Afterward it becomes closer to a darker movie from that creator, featuring progressively explicit brutality , a tangible relation to the actual suffering of conflict.
By the end, it becomes an outright Grand Guignol carnage.
The terror that turns this a Halloween-friendly viewing begins a lot earlier than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted gorehounds, for lovers of intense movies who desire to see a film they’ve never watched previously, and are able to withstand a narrative which delivers absolutely no punches.
View it with the lights off without any distractions, and that ending will crawl under your skin and take up residence there.
