The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How Pluribus Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception
One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
