Those A$150 Million Men Transforming a Highlight Machine
This year's NBA campaign tips off this week, marking the initial occasion in a decade that Aussie pair of biggest hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are without a roster spot.
Their absence indicates a changing of the guard, as Boomers’ backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels emerge as essential players for playoff aspirants, with recently signed nine-figure contracts establishing them as some of Australia’s highest sporting earners.
They aren't the only ones. Fourteen Australians are set to compete for minutes around the league, including veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself
Following lengthy discussions with the Bulls, the guard ultimately inked his rookie extension worth US$100 million ($153m) over four seasons last month. It's a major deal for the Melbourne native, but in NBA terms it is affordable for Giddey’s position and profile as a lead playmaker. The reluctance for the Bulls management to offer a max deal means the 23-year-old begins this season with a point to make.
Having been traded by the Thunder at the start of last campaign, he watched as his old team charged to the NBA championship without him. As the Bulls look to reach the postseason in the weaker Eastern Conference, he will have to show his scoring and defensive skills are starter-worthy or else he may fall back towards the NBA’s fringe.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
Daniels signed the identical contract as his counterpart this week, and after his MIP honor last year, the Atlanta player's career has skyrocketed in Atlanta following his exit from the New Orleans. He is now lauded as one of the NBA's best perimeter defenders, and led the league in steals with 3.0 spg – more than one full takeaway per game higher than the tally of the runner-up.
Playing next to dynamic Trae Young in Atlanta, the 22-year-old can be effective this campaign as a secondary ballhandler and defensive stopper as long as the Hawks make the playoffs. But if he can elevate his three-point shooting, which was below league average last year, and keep enhance his passing and attacking, he could become one of the association's most versatile talents.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Pacers forward Furphy has emerged as a fan favourite in Indiana following a series of highlight-reel dunks in pre-season. His acrobatics prompted league figure Pat Beverley to describe him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an opportunity to the All-Star dunk contest could be on the table.
After playing just eight minutes per game over 50 appearances in his debut season, the ex- college student is in contention for a Indiana rotation that might favor young players following injury to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor A Long-Range Threat
Guard the Sydney native dropped in the June draft all the way to the 49th pick, where Eastern Conference contenders the Cavaliers picked him. The Cavs are favourites to reach the Finals from the East, so it would be unusual for a rookie taken in the late picks to see significant playing minutes. But the Sydney product has earned time in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting offers him a opportunity to contribute.
Playing Time Squeeze Ahead for Veteran Quintet
Seasoned big man Jock Landale has a chance to claim the starting centre spot in Memphis given top prospect Zach Edey will miss the opening of the campaign after a surgical procedure.
In Portland, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could see regular minutes if the Blazers become competitive. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is expected to be deployed as a defensive spark in a reserve role.
In Charlotte, Josh Green's summer shoulder surgery has resulted in him with no return date to return. The 24-year-old still has a contract for the upcoming year, but won’t want to give his colleagues at the developing Charlotte too much advantage. And injury has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has missed key pre-season chances in the Mavericks.
Aussie Hoopers On the Fringe
Then there are those who are unlikely to see a lot of, if any, game action this season. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but appears to be little more than a big brother ensuring Anthony Edwards focused.
Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be nurtured by the Wolves through their G-League team. Other first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in the Bulls and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the slow cooker, while the experienced Luke Travers will be aiming to win playing time with Proctor for the Cavaliers.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
Should anyone question Mills was planning to end his career, he answered them with a training clip posted on his social media recently, demonstrating the veteran is still sharp and focused on securing another league deal.
What Simmons is thinking is anyone’s guess after an off-season in Australia, angling and using with a Sherrin. Although he took to social media last month to deny rumors he was done, the former All-Star – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has not yet surface.
